Her Winter
A poem

The hour before sunset sun Casting long shadows on the earth Alluring shadows highlighting her kohl scarred hills and valleys Glistening on each strand of grass Slowly waving goodbye to the day There's a certainty to her winter All of summer's lushness blown away Leaving her in maturing starkness A subtle beauty Drawing you in to take a closer look Pulling back her dress Bearing her nakedness for all to see The skeletons of the trees The baldness of the grass Here I am she declares I'm not just dry and brown I'm so many shades in between If you love me in my summer dress Then love me still in my stark bare beauty In my crisp coolness In my bright tepid sunshine Protect my fields from nazar* For such is my beauty Slowly waving goodbye to the day Glistening on each strand of grass Alluring shadows highlighting my sacred hills and valleys Casting long shadows on the earth The hour before sunset sun

* Nazar refers to the evil eye - the negative effect of the envious gaze of others.
